This my part of an art trade with She asked me to draw her precious Minor in a forest with faries, but since I couldn't do faries, I decided to do butterflies. He is the first brown unicorn I have colored. I hope you like it
This is her part [link]
When I was drawing him, I was in my collegue's library, and I forgot he had feather in his forelocks. I mostly have trouble drawing horses' feet, and I spent an hour in his, so I asked if she would mind me to leave him without feather, and she didn't. So that's why he has no feathers. As you can see my water still needs more practice, and for the splash I have no way to make it seem white, so for now, that's all I can do.
The horn in the original one looks more light and soft, but I don't want to bother arguing about my scanner. Constructive comments are always welcome
lolz the first thing I notices was that the subjects blends with the background. This can be remedied a little bit on this picture by deepening the deep shadows on the unicorn (not all the little muscle shadows you have, but rather, the overall shape that the sun hits and doesn't hit). In your next picture, I would suggest drawing the background lighter, and use a bit of light blue or grey to make it fade, so that it fades back and gives all the attention to your subject (and makes your butterflies look like butterflies instead of flowers in the background.) I suggest that you take another look at horse anatomy to figure out those hooves, and also how the light hits muscles. I looks a little bit like you made up all the highlights, so they end up in weird places.
More constructive for your next picture, is that as well as deepen your shadows, you should lighten your highlights, maybe put another light color (like yellow or red depending on the shade of brown you use) on the edges of the white you leave (that's right leave some white, but only in places that are truly highlighted.
Um... I actually like the smaller trees I see in the background. I would suggest doing more of those and less of the big thick trees that detract from the subject. And lastly, the water.
Think of water like a soft broken mirror. Most people think of water as blue because when out in the open under a blue sky, it reflects the sky! But in a forest like this, it would reflect the darkest of those colors, and have white highlights where the light hits. You wouldn't see much blue at all. In technique, I suggest going very slow with your pencils, and try not to get any stroke marks at all visible. That will make your water look very smooth. Also, you're right in knowing the splashes need to be white, but you also have to think about the splash shape itself.
Think of water as a solid object just like everything else. Depending on how the hoof hits it, it's going to spray in a certain way, and the edges will be rounded. Though the details will be small, treat the drops and splashes like I'm asking you to treat the rest of the water. No quick strokes, no lines. I suggest looking at pictures of splashes, and to watch a horse splash through water if you can. Use a reference, it's the best model you can have.
That's about it! I love the shape and color of his body, and how proud he looks! Keep improving!
